For Gen Z, a generation that has grown up in the digital age, witnessed unprecedented social movements, and faced significant economic and environmental challenges, the choice of Gov. Walz represents hope and a vision for a more inclusive and equitable future. Gov. Tim Walz has consistently shown a dedication to education, climate action, social justice, and health equity, areas that are deeply important to young people today.

Gov. Walz’s background as a teacher and his efforts to improve the education system resonate strongly with Gen Z. We are a generation that values access to quality education and understands its power to transform lives. His focus on reducing educational disparities and increasing funding for schools is crucial for ensuring that all young people, regardless of their background, have the opportunity to succeed. As a former 5th-grade U.S. History teacher, I understand how crucial it is for students to have the right resources. Gov. Walz has ensured that all K-12 students in the state have access to free breakfast and lunch on school days, recognizing that students can’t learn when they are hungry.

Significant Reforms: Banning Chokeholds and Increasing Police Transparency

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, and Gen Z is at the forefront of the fight for environmental justice. Gov. Walz’s commitment to sustainable policies and renewable energy initiatives aligns with our generation’s demand for urgent climate action. His leadership in this area gives us hope that our voices are being heard and that meaningful steps will be taken to protect our planet for future generations.

For Black Gen Z, the choice of Gov. Tim Walz as a running mate is particularly significant. His efforts to address racial disparities and promote equity within Minnesota have not gone unnoticed. Gov. Walz has worked tirelessly to implement policies aimed at reducing racial inequities in health, education, and the criminal justice system.

During his tenure, he signed legislation to ban chokeholds and increase transparency in policing following the killing of George Floyd, which sparked nationwide protests and calls for systemic reform.

When we go to vote, it’s crucial to scrutinize the records of those running and understand how those records reflect their values. Gov. Walz’s history and values align with what Gen Z, especially Black Gen Z, stands for: equity, justice, and progress. The choice between Harris-Walz and Trump-Vance couldn’t be starker. Harris and Walz have a proven track record of moving us forward, advocating for education, equality, climate action, and social justice. In contrast, Trump and Vance offer a return to the worst parts of our nation’s past, marked by hate, divisiveness and regression.

The reality for Gen Z, especially Black Gen Z, is that this election is pivotal. The decisions we make will directly shape our future. Harris and Walz offer a vision for a future where we continue to advance, addressing the pressing issues of our time. On the other hand, Trump and Vance threaten to drag us back, forcing us to fight the same battles for basic civil rights that our ancestors did. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to register to vote and to turn out in numbers.

The selection of Governor Walz as Vice President Harris’s running mate is a powerful statement of commitment to the issues that matter most to Gen Z, especially Black Gen Z. It is a call to action for all of us to continue pushing for progress and to work together towards a brighter, more equitable future. This election is not just a choice; it’s a statement about the kind of country we want to be. Let’s make sure our voices are heard.
