TULSA, Okla. – The Commemoration Fund is proud to announce the opening of its fifth grant cycle. Established in 2020, the grant-making organization was developed in response to the disproportionate needs of Tulsa’s Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and historically underserved communities.

The fund has supported the successful expansion of dozens of programs across the metro area. Just as in previous years, the Commemoration Fund’s Advisory Board invites local nonprofits and programs committed to deliberately addressing the unique challenges present in Tulsa’s communities of color to apply.

“Since debuting in 2020, the Commemoration Fund has awarded 111 grants to 64 BIPOC-led and BIPOC-serving organizations throughout Tulsa,” said Chair Hannibal B. Johnson. “We empower people. Our board relishes the opportunity to invest in customized solutions crafted by local nonprofits to confront, challenge, and correct social inequities impacting communities of color.”

With this grant cycle, the Board projects it will surpass $5 million awarded in the span of five years in support of program initiatives ranging from social justice reform to community and youth development, health equity, and economic development.

“As a Board, we are honored to play a role in supporting organizations that are driving meaningful change in Tulsa. These grants are not just an investment in today, but in a more equitable and thriving future for all our communities, particularly, those that were historically and continue to be underserved,” said Vice Chair Dr. Eunice Tarver.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to empowering those who are directly addressing the challenges and opportunities that will shape our city for generations to come,” Dr. Tarver added.

Grant applications open for 2025 Commemoration Fund

Organizations applying for a grant from the Commemoration Fund can request between $3,000 to $100,000 for one year of financial support to execute their strategic efforts in improving the lives of their participants and communities.

Awarded funds can be used for developmental tactics designed to champion diversity and equity throughout Tulsa such as launching or expanding new programs, purchasing new equipment, supporting general operations, or bolstering organizational capacity.

The Commemoration Fund has attracted an overwhelming response from the nonprofit community, with more than 280 applications submitted in previous cycles requesting over $21 million in total funding.

This high level of interest demonstrates both the drive within BIPOC-led organizations and the community’s increasing desire to provide sustainable solutions that advance diversity and equity for fellow Tulsans.

“Each application to the Commemoration Fund represents the work being done to improve outcomes for people across our community. Although this grant cycle is competitive, we urge all eligible organizations to apply, as your interest highlights the pressing need for equitable funding,” said Board Secretary Ashley Harris Philippsen.

“Your endeavors not only strengthen Tulsa but also bolster the vital connections and partnerships to drive our city forward. Your work has enabled greater investment in change-making organizations and projects,” Philippsen added.

The Commemoration Fund is hosting informational webinars for interested applicants on Wednesday, Nov. 20, and Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 11:30 a.m. The sessions will provide an overview of the application process and a time for applicants to ask questions.

Grant applications will be accepted now through January 31, 2025. Organizations can apply or register for the webinar by visiting the Commemoration Fund’s website at https://zarrow.org/commemorationfund/.
