OKLAHOMA– The entirety of Geary, Oklahoma’s police force as well as two city councilors have resigned from their official positions.

The news broke early Thursday, November 1, in the small Oklahoma town with a population just under 1,000. Geary Police Department consisted of three officers and one police chief. With a lack of law enforcement and the absence of two city council members, residents fear they have been left in the dark.

Little explanation has been offered to address the abrupt resignations. Former Police Chief Alicia Ford said in regards to the abandonment of her position, “It is with great sadness that I and the rest of the Geary police officers will no longer be serving this community.”

The only semblance of reasoning she provided was that “it was the right decision for me and the other officers.”

Ford also encouraged residents to familiarize themselves with their city councilors and show up to council meetings. “Your voices are stronger when you stand together as one, and you all have the ability to affect the change you want to see in your community,” wrote Ford.

Interim Chief

With a newfound lack of law enforcement, JJ Stitt is filling in as active chief. Stitt is a former candidate for House District 26 and a distant cousin of Gov. Kevin Stitt. He ultimately lost in the 2022 primary election but has extensive experience as a peace officer. The city previously hired Stitt to conduct an audit of the police department, a fact that some residents find suspicious.

City Council Resignations

In addition to the four police department resignations, two of three active city councilors have also announced their departure. Councilors Glen “Rocky” Coleman Jr. and Kristy Miller are no longer members of the city council, leaving the horseshoe with only one official. Coleman cited a difference in values and a lack of communication between the council and city administration.

Ward 3 Councilor Sandra Cleveland now stands alone as Ward 4 currently has no active representation.
