WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Authorities detained an armed suspect near Trump International Golf Club on Sunday afternoon, marking the second assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump’s life this year. On July 13, 2024, at a rally in Pennsylvania, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks tried to kill the former president. The incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. while Trump was present at the course.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw provided details of the coordinated operation that led to the arrest. A black Nissan, believed to be connected to the incident, was identified through license plate readers and tracked as it headed north on I-95. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office intercepted the vehicle, pulling it over and detaining the suspect without incident.

A witness, who had observed the suspect fleeing from bushes near the golf course, was brought to the scene and positively identified the man.

Upon searching the area where the suspect had been hiding, law enforcement discovered an AK-47-style rifle equipped with a scope, two backpacks, and a GoPro camera. Authorities believe the individual was attempting to film footage near the property. A Secret Service agent, positioned one hole ahead of the former president on the course, first spotted the rifle barrel protruding from a fence and quickly confronted the suspect, prompting him to flee.

“The quick response and coordination between the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office ensured the safety of former President Trump,” a Secret Service representative said during a press briefing. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

The FBI has assumed leadership of the investigation, deploying bomb technicians, investigative teams, and evidence response units to the scene. Jeffrey Veltri, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Miami office, urged the public to avoid the area around the golf course while the investigation is ongoing.

“We are working closely with our partners at the local, state, and federal levels to ensure a thorough investigation,” Veltri said. He encouraged anyone with relevant information to contact the FBI tip line.

Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg confirmed that prosecutors are in the process of filing warrants and a motion for pretrial detention. Arenberg emphasized that while state charges are expected, federal charges could follow as the investigation continues.

Despite the gravity of the situation, law enforcement officials assured residents that there is no ongoing threat to public safety. While certain areas around the golf course will remain restricted, local schools, libraries, and businesses are expected to operate normally.

Vice President and Trump’s opponent in the 2024 Presidential Election, Kamala Harris, responded, “I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America.”

Trump’s running mate JD Vance, also responded, “I’m glad President Trump is safe. I spoke to him before the news was public, and he was, amazingly, in good spirits. Still much we don’t know, but I’ll be hugging my kids extra tight tonight and saying a prayer of gratitude.”

Photos of the recovered rifle, backpacks, and other evidence are expected to be released as the investigation unfolds. Authorities have promised further updates as they continue to process the scene and examine the suspect’s potential motives.

    Whether for infamy or power, there is one obvious message, there are many white men who are tired of the incessant liar and provocateur of violence.

  3. This was not an assassination attempt but a breach of security. DonOld Trump’s life was never in danger.

    1. I am of the opinion even it were a breach of security, the man in the bushes with the rifle was not hunting squirrels or pigeons. In the bushes for twelve hour waiting. Gun pointed. With a loaded rifle. It is not hard to prove his motive. Motive can kill. ijs
